The apes use the tablet to express their wants and needs by identifying the items they are familiar with on the screen. This is done primarily through an app designed for children affected with autism that displays an array of images on screen.
Orangutans are pretty intelligent animals, but lack voice boxes and vocal cords, which can make communication difficult. Before this discovery, zoo keepers have been using sign language to communicate with them.
Using the iPad gives the orangutans another form of communication with humans, provides them with mental stimulation, and also gives those who don’t know sign language a chance to interact with humans.
Oyinbos and their many wahalas... But seriously, if they could communicate with 'apes' using iPads, then we should be able to plead with our 'President' using a 3310... abi!
