With thousands of queries hitting the web giant every second, I can’t help but wonder how on earth they get to survive these myriad of requests, serve us what we demand and keep everybody happy.
I have worked withserviettes servers and routers before so I know the kinda power such electronic monsters are always fed with. Talking about equipment at a company like Google… please do not go there!
There is so much secrecy about the location of their data centers (due to the fact that they seek permits for the location of their data centers using companies that do not mention their name) so it is pretty difficult to really know the exact amount of data centers they have world over.
Ok… lemme give you a little sneak peek into what we are talking about: Google has 19 locations in the US where they operate data centers, 12 in Europe, one in Russia, one in South America, and three in Asia. That makes thirty-six (36) data centers right? By its design blue print, Google erects 150 racks in each data center and 40 servers per rack, so that would mean Google has more than 200,000 servers! So how many watts of energy power these beasts?
Google declared last Wednesday that it uses 260 million watts continuously across the globe. Jezz!!! That’s some supply for my street, Emeka’s, Umakpukororo’s, Godwin’s… what am I saying sef? Enough for my local government and maybe some other two!
But here is the interesting part: it was also declared that an average search uses 0.3 watt-hours of electricity. So how much of e-electricity have you consumed in your entire life time all in the name of googling this and that? Please stop embarrassing yourself because I can hear your thoughts…
If to say Google get data center for Nigeria. What did you just say? What is wrong with Nigeria? Ptcheeew…
Where I drop ma jotter sef? Make I go google am joor...
